Often the road to business isn’t what you expect.

For Courtney Shoemaker, it was realizing her own unhealthy lifestyle and listening to country music.

Through a series of events, Shoemaker wound up in North Dakota because of country music. It was there she joined forces with her business partner to open CrossFit Icehouse. Opening in a market where she knew nobody was extremely difficult. Over time, the years got easier and the membership started to grow. But, Shoemaker had to learn one more lesson: what burnout looks like, feels like and how to bounce back from it.

Ultimately, she said it comes down to taking time for herself. She has to step away from the gym and not think about business in order to feel rejuvenated. For Shoemaker, that means skydiving.
