Why Set Specific Goals?


And here goes my yearly post on goals…

But seriously, have you set any? Have you made some resolutions? And are they smart?

In a previous blog, I talked about SMART goals: specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely objectives. It’s a way to set goals that are attainable and a way to set you up for success in terms of being able to achieve them.

Now, I’ve never really been one to set goals, at least in terms of writing them down and pinning them to a bulletin board for all to see. However, since starting CrossFit and joining the Box Pro team, I’ve encountered more goal setting than ever before.

For example, it was a goal of mine in 2016 to get a pull-up. It may have taken over half the year, but just two months ago I did Helen RX and I’ve progressed in stringing pull-ups together.

It was also a goal of mine in 2016 to grow Box Pro’s brand. While that goal wasn’t at first very specific, I found ways to make it measurable. I viewed social media engagement increases, podcast listener growth and the success of the Box Pro Leadership Summit as ways to gauge if the brand had grown at all. And I think it has!

What goals did you set for 2016? Which ones did you accomplish? Which ones did you forget about? And how will you build upon them in 2017?

For me, I know personally I need to be healthier. I’ve battled a lot of illness this year, and I think it’s from a diet lacking in specific nutrients. Plus, I’ve seen so many benefits come from my increased fitness levels in 2016 – I have more energy than my friends and am able to take on crazy challenges like climbing my first 14er. So come early January, I will be doing a nutrition challenge to learn more about what I need and how to get it. I hope to carry that throughout the year and beyond.

In terms of Box Pro, I want to grow Instagram and our podcast, Box Talk. I think both are fantastic outlets to reach Affiliates with information that can truly benefit their business. I know this means coming up with strategies for posting and producing, but I still need to make these goals more measurable. That’s something I suppose I shall work on.

Now that I’ve shared a couple goals with you, what are your goals, Affiliate? Personally and professionally because it is key to have both.

Set goals this year with a plan of how to measure and attain them. You never know: 2017 might just be your year.
