Google Now Penalizes Your Non-Responsive Website

Powered By AwesomeOver 50 percent of total web traffic is now being generated from mobile devices, and in Google’s constant pursuit to help the user find what they’re looking for, Google recently posted on its blog about upcoming changes in rankings of smartphone search results.

So what does this mean? Well, for starters, if your site isn’t mobile-friendly, then Google will consider your website less user-friendly and therefore will decrease the chance of users finding what they’re looking for.

How do you know if your site is responsive? If you don’t know if your site is responsive, then it probably isn’t, but here are a few spot-tests you can use to help determine if your site is ready.

  • If your site was built over two years ago, it’s almost guaranteed that your site isn’t mobile friendly. The technology existed, but wasn’t widely adopted.
  • If you’re using a completely separate mobile site, it’s most likely not mobile friendly. This is what Google listed as one of the common mistakes you’ll want to avoid.
  • If you have to “pinch-and-zoom” to read your site, it’s not mobile friendly.

How do you make your site responsive? If you have the technical know-how — and time — you can always do this yourself. If you’re using a pre-designed theme — specifically if you’re using WordPress — then you can always update your theme to a new one. However, for the rest of you with old or custom sites, you may want to contact a developer, or if the timing is right, look into a complete website re-design. The lifespan of most websites tends to be 18 to 24 months, after which the design starts to look aged and becomes less effective.
