From the moment the doors open at 5:30 a.m., CrossFit Sanitas in Boulder, Colorado, has classes running every hour until 7:30 p.m.
“It gives them options to stay committed to their fitness and everything,” said Tom Baker, the manager of the Box. “Having classes every hour allows them to not really have that excuse of, ‘Oh well, there’s no time for me to get there,’ because there literally is any time you could get here.”
It works for the Boulder community that isn’t filled with your typical 9-5 desk jobs. Baker explained members are coming in all day; the 10:30 a.m. class alone has about 13 attendees on a regular basis. With that many classes throughout the day, there is also a lot of variety in terms of programs offered.
From yoga and mobility to gymnastics and endurance, Baker explained it’s helpful to have so many choices for people, especially if CrossFit intimidates them. It can also be beneficial for the staff to take ownership and learn programming. “Having all the programs, it gives the Coaches an opportunity to take ownership of a piece of the gym themselves, which I think just makes them a more ingrained part of the community and gives them a larger sense of purpose,” he said.
But the extra member amenities don’t stop at additional programs in the Box. Baker shared a few amenities they use to build community and increase the membership experience at CrossFit Sanitas:
On the Box’s website, a member directory lists members, their business and contact information.
“Being in Boulder, we have a lot of people who run their own business, so we’re trying to just do our part,” said Baker. “Since the major function of CrossFit is the all around community aspect, so we want to do whatever we can to support our members.”
Baker said they also use Facebook community pages to connect members when it comes to finding babysitters, selling a couch, finding a roommate, etc.
This page on the website is full of resources for members. Baker said it’s important for the athlete to function in all areas of wellness, from eating right to simply having someone to vent to. The offering is just another step to helping members inside and out of the gym.
On the website, the Box has a page of videos depicting how to do movements like an air squat to a muscle up. “The videos are just for people who are more visually driven and just feel like they need to do research and understand things on a much deeper level before really diving in to things, and it helps establish our credibility,” said Baker.
Even though CrossFit Sanitas has plenty of programs and amenities, Baker noted Affiliates shouldn’t try and offer everything at once. He said to ask your membership what they want, because they are the ones that make it awesome.
“So the more you can get to know your members and harbor that community, the better you’ll be able to create the kind of services and stuff that they’re going to enjoy and want more of and then be able to tell their friends about and continue to allow your gym to grow,” said Baker.
