CrossFit and community are like peanut butter and jelly: They just make sense.
But when it comes to building your culture and reaching the different demographics surrounding your gym, what does it entail as an Affiliate? How do you educate people about who you are and what you do?
Sean Emery, a co-owner of Old City CrossFit located in Washington D.C., shared his journey of finding the fitness regimen and soon after, opening the Box. While it took some time to cultivate the community he was looking for, Emery now has a business with a culture he loves. And he’s reaching the various demographics around his Box, including one very special niche: the deaf community.
First highlighted by a video produced by CrossFit in 2014, the Affiliate is near Gallaudet University, a school for the deaf. Students of the school have joined the Box, and the community of the Affiliate have responded positively. But, this is just one of many ways Emery and his business have become involved in the local area. Whether its participating in after-school programs or setting up events surrounding a member’s band, Old City CrossFit is making its mark.
Listen to the podcast with Emery and hear how exactly he’s educating his community about his business. And what exactly that means for his Box’s culture.
