Every one of your Coaches has their Level 1, but what’s next? Continuing education is important, but choosing the route of what to pursue can be tricky. Sometimes education isn’t found in a certificate or a degree, however. Here are a few unique and cheap ways you can grow yourself or your staff through education practices:
Podcasts are a great first place to start. Why? They are free and you can listen on the go. There’s no excuse as to why you can’t listen to one when it can be playing in the background while you do the dishes or go on a run.
“Don’t Keep Your Day Job” is a podcast that highlights strategies aimed at turning passion to profit. Cathy Heller interviews unique creatives all with the goal of turning something they love into a financially feasible reality. If you feel stuck in a rut with an idea, or just don’t know where to turn when it comes to the operational side of your business, this is a good first place to start.
Books seem like an obvious answer, but when was the last time you read a book to actually learn something? It is worth it to give credit where credit is due and pick up a motivational or self-help book once in a while.
“The 5 Levels of Leadership” by John C. Maxwell explains the five distinct levels of leadership and the keys to evaluating and improving the quality of an individual’s leadership ability. This could be a good book for the staff at your Box to read together to learn how each individual on the team leads and how to better understand them. Try to set aside a specific time for everyone to meet and talk about what they took away from a specific chapter.
CrossFit is a service industry, and you and your staff are inevitably going to be in front of classes or dealing with customers in one way or another. No conversation goes the same way, so it is important to grow your communication skills as much as possible.
Toastmasters International is a company that develops communication skills in leaders across the country. Participants will take on different roles throughout a meeting, all while developing their speaking skills. If Toastmasters seems too formal for your Coaches, have them try their hand at a stand-up comedy class or role-play scenarios at weekly meetings.
Not every educational pursuit is going to put your gym in a financial bind. You can grow your staff by simply starting a book club or at least making education a priority. Nothing is wrong with constantly wanting to be a student.
