5 Effective Time Management Strategies for Box Owners

time management strategies

It’s no small feat to run a successful gym. Your days start early and end late. Time management tends to be at the top of many Affiliate owners’ list of entrepreneurship challenges.

As much as we wish for it, we can’t add more hours to the day. Using the time you do have more effectively can lead to major financial rewards in addition to saving your sanity as a small business owner. The following are five simple strategies to help you make the most of your time:

Create a List of Goals

Creating goals will help you focus your time on the things that will add value to your business. Create goals for the week, month and long term. Don’t just think about your goals; write them down. You can increase the likelihood of achieving your goals by 42 percent simply by writing them down on a regular basis, according to a study.

All business owners should be SMART about setting goals. The S.M.A.R.T. acronym stands for specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound. The more specific the goal, the more likely it will be completed. Think about who, what, where, when, which and why when specifying your goals. A measurable goal means you are able to track your progress. It is critical your goal is always time-bound, or given a timeframe for completion, otherwise it’s simply a dream.

Delegate, Delegate, Delegate

If you want something done right, do it yourself, right? Wrong. Just because it is your business does not mean you have to be the new member liaison, janitor, blog writer, head trainer, accountant, receptionist and meal planner extraordinaire. That’s a really great way to burn out. There is an art to delegating and it starts with letting go.

Hire responsible, dedicated Coaches and you should have no qualms about delegating tasks to them. Think about the strengths of your Coaches when deciding which tasks to delegate in order to increase efficiency. Not only is delegating great for you and your sanity as an owner, it also benefits your Coaches. Under your mentorship, delegating tasks can really help your employees develop professionally.

Remember your employees’ time is valuable too. You are paying them after all. Be sure they have access to the right training and tools to boost their productivity.

Invest in Time Saving Tools

Think about areas of your business where you may be spending more time than really necessary. Is there any way to complete the task faster and more effectively? One common problem for gym owners is the amount of time they or their employees must spend cleaning the gym. Dragging a mop across mats is difficult and time consuming. A floor scrubber is one example of a time saving tool that helps affiliate owners across the country clean their space in fraction of the time. Not only does a scrubber clean faster, it cleans in a more hygienic manner than traditional methods. That means you are saving time all while adding value to your business by increasing cleanliness and enhancing your member experience. With equipment that saves times and allows you to improve the overall experience for members, you can’t go wrong.

Management software is another time saving tool that can help organize and automate scheduling, payments, attendance and more. Research and demo software until you find the right fit for your business.

Hone in on Your Magic Hour

We all have a particular time of day when we are most productive. Some of us are most productive early in the mornings while others have their magic hour late at night. That time, whenever it is, is gold. Find your natural rhythm and schedule your day accordingly. By really utilizing your magic hour, you can get much more achieved in a shorter period of time. Many people think of this time as when they are in “the zone.”

Focus on Retention

You want to grow your business so you put a lot of time and energy into bringing in new clients. However, focusing on retention of your current membership base is arguably more important. Loyalty is earned. Building a loyal community starts with a passionate, unwavering dedication to your members. Keep striving to give your current members more. Increase your knowledge, improve the space and keep your gym immaculate. All of these things help create your gym’s brand or image, and that reputation has the power to take your gym to the next level.

Your time is valuable. Pursue excellence in all facets of your business, including better time management. As Greg Glassman has said: “People in the blinding, impassioned, maddened pursuit of excellence will find themselves wealthy.” If there is an area of your Affiliate that could use improvement, improve it. It all starts with effective time management.
