What better way to start spring off than with a bit of cleaning? OK, no one really loves the idea of taking time out of their schedule to clean, but there is no better way to awaken from our winter hibernations than to dust off the cobwebs and do a bit of cleaning.
You may believe you do a good job at consistently cleaning your equipment or gym floor year-round, but everything can always use a deep clean. Along with the other areas of your gym that might not get as much care and consideration, think about your pro shop, the locker room or cubbies, and especially the bathroom.
Here are a few things to keep in mind to make sure you spring forward with your cleaning and not fall back:
Organization is imperative at a gym. Making sure free weights, jump ropes and any other equipment is stored correctly will prevent injuries and create an all-over safer environment. Take the new season as a sign you may need to purchase more weight racks or wall hooks to store things on.
As important as organizing your equipment is, it is equally important to take this time to weed through, and get rid of, what you don’t use as often. Before you run out and buy new shelving units, rethink what you are storing and why. If you have been eyeing new equipment recently to replace something, or have actually replaced that item and still have the older version off to the side, try hosting a yard sale or adding listings on Facebook Marketplace to rid yourself of these items.
If cleaning commercials have taught us anything in life, it is that tiles in bathrooms are never as clean as they appear. If your locker rooms or bathrooms have tiling walls or flooring, a simple mop with soap isn’t going to do the trick. Use this spring cleaning time to really scrub away any build up or deposits left in the crevices of the tile.
It’s easy to spray disinfectants with fruity or flowery smells to mask the odor sweat leaves. But that is simply masking the odor and not getting to the source of the smell. Bacteria buildup is usually to blame for odors. Between shoes, dirt and sweat, bacteria loves to make a home on your gym floor. And while you should be scrubbing the floor every single day, use Spring as a chance to dig deep and make sure you have floors that won’t be spreading bacteria any time soon.
