As the industry has expanded, you hear one word more and more: professionalism.
Merriam-Webster defines professionalism as “the conduct, aims or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person.”
The industry and the Affiliates in it are changing. More is expected of a Box today than five years ago. You’ve seen a rise in cleanliness expectations from your members. Better equipment and solid coaching is also a must.
But what about you, Affiliate? There is a growing expectation as well of how the owner handles him or herself. It’s time to look beyond your equipment and your staff, analyzing how you conduct business in your own gym.
Here are five areas to evaluate how to grow in professionalism in your business:
- Look the part. Yes, you’re in a gym where sweatpants, booty shorts and shirtlessness status are often acceptable. But think about how your dress — or lack there of — might affect potential members or drop-ins. It could also affect how your staff perceives you. Putting on a pair of jeans might seem silly in the gym, but “dressing up” can show you care and often gives off a better vibe to newcomers and staff. At the very least, brush your hair, shower and wear matching clothes.
- Keep your commitments. If you say you’re going to be somewhere or do something, be there or do it. There are a variety of apps and tools out there to help you remember what needs to get done and where you need to be. However, if you can’t keep a commitment because of unforeseen circumstances, let people know immediately.
- Hold yourself accountable. You are the leader at you gym whether you like it or not. You need to hold yourself accountable in your actions, thoughts and words. If you make a mistake, own it and work to fix it. Honesty and integrity are huge in professionalism.
- Strive for competency. OK, so you probably have years of coaching under your belt and are pretty competent in it. But, you need to remember there is always more to learn. Push your Coaches to grow while you do the same.
- Be polite. Whether it’s with your staff or your members, professionalism means being polite and handling relationships accordingly. Even more, if you are in an argument it means handling it with composure. Stay professional even under pressure.
